Western Digital forecast quarterly revenue slightly above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, betting on strong AI-driven demand for its hard disk drives. Still, its shares dropped more than 9% in extended trading, after the forecast failed to impress investors even though the stock has tripled this year on expectations of sustained AI-driven growth. Memory and storage stocks have soared this year as investors bet data-center demand will support pricing and fuel growth across the industry.
Shares of ad-technology platform AppLovin fell sharply after it reported soft second-quarter earnings on Wednesday afternoon. AppLovin stock was down 21% in after-hours trading. Sales came in at $1.92 billion, just shy of the $1.94 billion expected by Wall Street and up 53% since last year.
The maker of Kraft Mac & Cheese plans to increase marketing spending to at least 6% of net sales, leaning on partnerships with the NFL and Disney and new campaigns as it tries to reverse a U.S. sales slump. “There’s nothing like putting a princess on a package that really gets young people excited,” says Steve Cahillane, CEO of Kraft Heinz, which said Wednesday it plans to spend an extra $100 million to catch more Americans' attention. Kraft Heinz said its marketing push is helping sales, though net sales still slipped 1.4% in the second quarter.
Block raised its full-year guidance and reported higher second-quarter revenue as growth in its commerce and financial solutions businesses helped to offset declines in Bitcoin.
