FedEx closes more U.S. locations as it changes how packages move

For decades, FedEx built out one of the country's largest delivery networks as Americans sent and ordered more packages. Now the delivery giant is rebuilding parts of that network from the inside out. Facilities that once operated separately are being combined, routes have been redesigned, and some ...

Inflation Is Cooling. But is 2% Out of Reach?

BlackRock's Rick Rieder says the latest CPI report gave markets reason to celebrate, but inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target. He argues the economy is now "in the ballpark" and that raising overnight rates may not be the most effective way to bring inflation lower. The bigger issue for markets may be the long end of the yield curve, where fiscal deficits, heavy treasury issuance and AI-related financing push real rates higher.

Maryland tax court voids digital ad tax, orders refunds to Apple, Google and Peacock TV

A Maryland state tax court has struck down the state’s first-in-the-nation tax on digital advertising and ordered state officials to repay the tax money already collected from big tech firms. The Maryland Tax Court said the tax violates the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act as well as the First Amendment and the commerce and due process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. Maryland estimated the tax, approved in 2021, could raise about $250 million a year to help pay for a sweeping K-12 education measure.

S&P 500 Logs Third Consecutive Weekly Gain

Stocks edged back from records Friday, with investors weighing weaker-than-anticipated economic data against an earnings season that has defied expectations. Stocks initially opened higher Friday morning as investors interpreted unexpected weakness in consumer spending and sentiment as further evidence that the Federal Reserve won’t raise interest rates at its September meeting. Coming on the heels of softer inflation data and a cooling labor market, the figures reinforced bets that the central bank will stand pat on rates.

The Joy of Markets: Wall Street Bathes in the Light, but Darkness Is Creeping In

Bob Ross, perhaps America’s most prolific artist, created more than 30,000 portraits over his long career in television through simple techniques, a narrow array of colors, and a gentle mannerism. A similar approach to financial markets this summer, however, would be terribly difficult to replicate. Stocks are flying off the shelves, bonds are warning of massive economic and inflation risks while simultaneously discounting Federal Reserve rate hikes, and volatility readings are at the lowest levels of the year despite myriad geopolitical risks.
