Gold recent rally is mostly due to five big buyers: four central banks and Tether, a company that deals in cryptocurrency. Tether is buying for the very reasons that central banks are—to diversify its holdings and hedge against inflation and significant dollar weakness, which Tether’s crypto stablecoin USDT is pegged to. In the first half, Tether bought more than 27 metric tons of gold—matching Kazakhstan.

Institutional investors pulled back slightly from key stock market segments such as semiconductors, AI infrastructure and megacap technology companies during the second quarter, with few big bets in either direction, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings show. A Reuters analysis of quarterly 13F filings from 6,371 pension funds, hedge funds, wealth managers and other institutional investors reveals a narrow gap between the number of investors increasing their positions and those reducing them, but in many cases the gap swung slightly negative. Nearly 44% of filers reviewed trimmed their holdings of the Magnificent Seven group of megacap tech firms such as Microsoft and Meta Platforms, while 42% initiated or expanded their holdings of this group.

Tiger Global Management trimmed several of its Big Tech stakes, exited Netflix, and took positions in Advanced Micro Devices and SpaceX during the second quarter, according to regulatory disclosures filed Friday. • The hedge fund cut its Alphabet holdings by 45.4% to 5.81 million shares as of June 30 from the end of March, and its Nvidia stake by 6.8% to 11.20 million shares. • It trimmed its Microsoft stake by 9.3% to 2.27 million shares and its Amazon position by 3.2% to 9.68 million shares.

Anthropic's investors are penciling in a $2 trillion October IPO that would shatter every record in stock market history, and the revenue growth backing that number is genuinely jaw-dropping. But one overlooked pattern in mega-cap listings suggests the opening bell could be the worst time to buy.

Meta Platforms will face a coalition of state attorneys general in a California federal court trial beginning on Wednesday over claims it engineered Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children, a case that could expose the company to massive damages and force it to make sweeping changes to its platforms. The trial in Oakland, expected to last seven weeks, will test Colorado, Kentucky, California and New Jersey's allegations that Meta designed its platforms to keep young users hooked and misled consumers about their safety. It will also address claims by 29 states that the company illegally collected and used children's data in violation of federal law.

Open-source software has been one of tech’s biggest-ever success stories. No surprise, then, that developers of open-weight AI models try to borrow some open-source sunshine. Meta Platforms chief Mark Zuckerberg on Monday became the latest tech executive to draw an equivalence between the two, calling open-weight models “open source AI” in a 6,500-word essay posted by the company.

IBM and startup Together AI have signed a $240 million multi-year agreement to build a large-scale artificial intelligence cluster on IBM Cloud using Nvidia systems, the companies said on Tuesday. The cluster will provide inference for open-source AI models, which have gained traction as businesses seek to rein in AI costs and weigh concerns about cybersecurity incidents involving models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta. Inference, the process of running trained AI models to generate responses, has become one of the largest drivers of demand for computing capacity, prompting cloud providers and chipmakers to spend billions of dollars expanding AI infrastructure.
Anthropic’s $965 billion IPO path rests on the aggressive, multi-layered industrialization of compute. The company has transformed access from a variable cost into a structural moat by diversifying hardware and energy supply across three continents through seven distinct funding mechanisms — effectively decoupling its growth from the supply-chain bottlenecks that throttle competitors tethered to single-cloud […]
