A Korea-sparked overnight surge lit the fuse, but SanDisk's investor day dropped on top of an already-moving sector with some of these names still sitting deep in the red from last month. Here is what is actually driving the storage stack today and whether the momentum holds.

<p>While U.S. ETF assets under management and flows rose to record levels in the first half of 2026, asset managers split the field with inflows from each constituency. Some continue to compete on price, but others are betting that investors will pay a premium for stellar short-term performance.</p>

Three of its top holdings, flash memory/data storage companies Seagate, Western Digital, and Sandisk, were among the biggest losers in the S&P 500 Friday. The stocks continued to slide following Western Digital's earnings late Wednesday, which were merely good as opposed to mind-blowingly fantastic. The memory ETF was being dragged down even more by Micron Technology and South Korean rival SK Hynix.

Monday’s market moves signaled chip stocks were on the rebound, with some of the same names that drove last week’s selloff leading today's gains. The PHLX Semiconductor Index was 2.1% higher and the Roundhill Memory ETF was up 2.3%. Chip maker stocks were some of the hardest hit names in last week’s selloff with the SOX index dipping into a technical bear market, down over 20% in roughly a month.

Hardware names, including chip stocks, are having a tough trading session, but some of the biggest tech companies are climbing higher. The Nasdaq was up 0.5%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.3%, and the Dow increased 0.3% or 151 points. The Nasdaq leading gains would suggest that tech is outperforming, but under the surface things are a bit more complicated.

The same chipmakers that have been investors' AI darlings are some of the biggest drags on today's market. The PHLX Semiconductor Index down 4.3% today with all components in the red, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) made history after its April launch, attracting more than $23 billion of net flows, the fastest exchange-traded fund to pull such numbers. The fund gives investors hard-to-find access to the biggest names in the memory chip manufacturing industry, including Korean companies that were previously difficult to invest in directly. Since then, several other memory funds have launched, with differing strategies all looking to grab a piece of the action.

DRAM’s recent post-earnings stumble is a clear reminder that the memory space remains a highly volatile arena where yesterday’s winners can cool off in a hurry. SK Hynix’s U.S. listing only complicates that.
