Google stock has gained 9% in 2026 but shares have swooned since mid-May amid investor worries over 2027 earnings estimates, analyst Ed Yardeni said.
Heading into Thursday’s session, Microsoft stock had fallen more than 24% in 2026, putting it on track for its steepest first-half decline since a nearly 32% drop in 2000, according to Dow Jones Market Data. For much of its history, Microsoft was best known as the pioneer behind the Windows operating system and wildly popular Office software. Microsoft seemed like an obvious early winner in AI: The company became OpenAI’s first major corporate backer through a $1 billion investment in 2019, aligning itself early on with one of the industry’s juggernauts.

The stock market is leaving Big Tech stocks in the dust. The Dow surged 733 points, or 1.4%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.3%. The Nasdaq, which was up nearly 1% at the open, was down 0.6%. More than four-in-five S&P 500 stocks were set to close higher, but the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF dropped 2%.

Alphabet shares fell further premarket following a report that two researchers key to Google’s artificial-intelligence model left the group, extending an exodus in top talent from the search company’s AI team. Shares in the Google owner slid 1.3% to $340.82 in premarket trade even as the broader tech complex rallied. Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel are planning to leave Google for Anthropic, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources.

Amazon and Microsoft's cloud computing services should be designated gatekeepers under EU rules aimed at reining in the power of Big Tech, EU antitrust regulators said on Thursday. Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, the two largest cloud providers globally, should be designated gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act which sets out a list of dos and don'ts to ensure a level playing field, the European Commission said. The preliminary findings by the EU competition enforcer came after a seven-month long investigation.
