Oil prices rise, but not by enough to drag Wall Street far off its records

Oil prices are rising Monday following the latest fighting to threaten the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, but Wall Street isn’t very worried, and U.S. stocks are hanging near their records. The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged from its all-time high set on Friday. United Airlines lost 2.9%, and cruise-operator Carnival fell 2.7% after the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil climbed 6.7% to $97.22.

Oil Prices Rise As U.S., Iran Play 'Game Of Chicken'; S&P 500 Futures Slip

Oil prices reversed much of Tuesday's decline as the U.S. and Iran dug in their heels in peace talks while renewed Persian Gulf attacks threatened a fragile ceasefire. With hopes for a resolution that would open the Strait of Hormuz once again dented, the clock is ticking to some near-term bad scenarios for both Iran and the global economy. After the S&P 500 scratched out a new record closing high on Wednesday, futures slipped early Thursday amid higher Treasury yields and a stronger U.S. dollar.

Micron’s Cheap Stock Valuation Seen as a Contrarian Warning Sign

(Bloomberg) -- Micron Technology Inc. is the third-best performer in the S&P 500 Index this year and at the same time one of the least expensive stocks in the market. While that dichotomy looks bullish on the surface, it may be more of a warning sign than a green light for investors. Most Read from BloombergSingapore Hands Byju's Founder His First Ever Jail TermIran’s Khamenei Says No Going Back for Middle East Rocked by WarEx-President Biden Sues to Stop DOJ Sharing Interview TapesTwo More Oil S

Don’t Expect United Airlines to Snap Up Smaller Carriers

United CEO Scott Kirby batted down speculation that his airline would buy JetBlue. United has a partnership with JetBlue that gives it access to slots at New York’s JFK International Airport, but Kirby said it was “mathematically impossible” for United to boost JetBlue’s margins enough for a merger to be worthwhile. “The last thing I’m going to do is buy a route network that loses money,” Kirby said Wednesday at an investor conference.

Airline stocks rally as oil retreat eases fuel cost pressure

Oil is down 8% over the last week as reports circulated that Washington and Tehran were edging closer to an agreement that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz. That drop helped push the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to record closing highs on Tuesday, underscoring the inverse relationship between crude prices and risk assets that has defined markets since the conflict began.

Oil Prices Slide On U.S.-Iran Peace Signals; Airline Stocks Take Off

Oil prices retreated below $90 a barrel Wednesday morning as markets seemed to conclude that a near-term opening of the Strait of Hormuz is very likely. Despite a flare-up in tensions over the prior 24 hours as the U.S. targeted small Iranian boats and missile sites, Iranian television helped place the focus on a peace deal, broadcasting terms of a 14-point framework. While the S&P 500 only managed a slight gain on Wednesday morning, airlines and cruise line stocks jumped, led by United Airlines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival and Delta Air Lines.

The tech rally looked to be losing some momentum Wednesday ahead of with earnings from artificial-intelligence hardware supplier Marvell Technology after the closing bell. Oil prices, meanwhile, continued to decline after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said the possibility of a return to war with the U.S. was “low.” Optimism around the U.S. and Iran reaching a peace agreement, despite ongoing hostilities, appeared to be growing.
