U.S. Stocks Down as Oil Rises Ahead of Inflation Data

U.S. stocks slid as negotiations about the future of the Strait of Hormuz remain deadlocked, pushing oil prices up ahead of key inflation data Wednesday. Oil futures rose $1.07, or 1.3%, to $83.20 a barrel, amid signs that the Middle East conflict may escalate again. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note declined 0.014 percentage point to 4.683%.

Technology stocks slipped again on Tuesday, as markets continued to trade sideways in the lead up to this week’s inflation reports. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6%. Brent crude oil futures rose 1.4% to $88.91 a barrel as the will-they-won’t-they between the U.S. and Iran continued to drag on global markets.

Oil prices bounced around in choppy trading and stock markets were little changed Tuesday as investors awaited a key inflation report and weighed progress on re-opening the Strait of Hormuz.  "But rising crude oil prices... and further delays in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, have introduced fresh inflation risks."
