Investors are practically begging AI’s big spenders to blink. Markets are making the option of pulling in the reins—or at least keeping capital spending steady—tantalizing. Google parent Alphabet’s stock fell almost 7% after it reported quarterly earnings last week that included a $10 billion hike in capital spending to around $200 billion this year.

Meta Platforms is set to publish its second-quarter results late Wednesday. For Meta stock, all eyes will be on the tech giant's capital expenditures and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's strategy for that AI spending. "In the wake of (Google's results), the market will be expecting Meta to raise its 2026 capital expenditures outlook from (the prior) $125 billion-$145 billion, and is also expecting Meta to preview a 'significant' increase in capex spend for 2027," Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney said in a client note Sunday.

PayPal doubled down on its turnaround plan on Tuesday, raising its 2026 profit forecast and outlining cost-saving steps, as it looks to convince investors that it is worth more than the $53 billion takeover offer that analysts described as "low-ball". The payments company, once the crown jewel of American financial technology, received a $60.50-per-share bid from Stripe and private equity firm Advent International, Reuters reported earlier this month, citing sources. The offer is a fraction of the roughly $360 billion valuation PayPal commanded as a pandemic-era darling in 2021.
Wall Street’s forecasts for Big Tech require a major leap of faith: that the biggest AI hyperscalers can boost revenue much faster than the costs of running their businesses. Investors are already on edge about these companies’ soaring capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence. The bullish earnings narrative requires these companies to achieve newfound operating efficiency even as they spend trillions of dollars in capex over the next few years.

A decades-long crackdown on Google's business practices in Europe is entering a costly new phase, as the loss of the first case brought against it under new EU legislation opens the door to a wave of private lawsuits demanding up to $10 billion in damages. That has been precipitated by a $1 billion fine, the first under the Digital Markets Act, imposed on the company for favouring its own services and preventing app developers from steering users to cheaper options outside its app store Google Play. "I think this will trigger a new wave of litigation," said Thomas Hoppner, a partner at Geradin Partners, which advised German price comparison platform Idealo for market abuse.
