Synopsys to cut chip fab manufacturing control software in shift to AI design, sources say

U.S. chip design giant Synopsys plans to stop offering a suite of manufacturing process control software used by global semiconductor makers, six sources briefed on the matter said, as it seeks to ‌divert resources to higher-margin offerings such as AI design. Synopsys in April and May informed more than 10 chipmakers including Samsung Electronics, ‌SK Hynix, Kioxia Holdings Corp and Qorvo Inc about the "end of life" move that means Synopsys will not provide future new versions and will only carry out maintenance obligations, two of the sources said.

SK Hynix said on Thursday it planned to invest 100 trillion won ($64.38 billion) to build ‌new NAND memory chip and packaging factories as part of a massive ‌investment programme aimed at addressing a shortage driven by the AI boom. Analysis-Samsung, SK Hynix mega South Korea chips gamble tests optimism of AI cycle

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are making one of the biggest bets yet on the artificial intelligence boom with investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars, but the planned capacity buildout is stoking fears of a painful reckoning if AI spending cools. The tech giants won praise - and a deep bow - from ‌President Lee Jae Myung after throwing their weight behind the government's semiconductor push, in an apparent departure from a previously restrained approach to capacity expansion shaped by decades of painful boom-and-bust cycles ‌in the memory industry. Under the plan, the government hopes South Korea can double its memory chip production capacity within five years.
