CoreWeave edges past quarterly revenue estimates

AI cloud company CoreWeave edged past Wall Street estimates for quarterly ‌revenue on Tuesday, driven by strong ‌demand for its computing services that power AI systems. So-called neoclouds such as CoreWeave ‌and peer Nebius, which offer hardware and cloud capacity to other technology companies, have seen demand skyrocket as a result of relentless enterprise spending on AI. CoreWeave, whose close ties with Nvidia have made it a key supplier of Nvidia's ‌AI chips, has attracted several high-profile customers so far this year.

Vistra (VST) Just Grew Ebitda 30%, So Why Did Profit Fall?

On August 7, Vistra (NYSE:VST) posted a quarter that reads like a puzzle. Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA jumped more than 30% year-over-year to $1,767 million in the three months ended June 30, yet GAAP net income actually slipped to $305 million. The gap traces back to hedge accounting rather than the underlying business, a reminder […]

Why Open-Weight AI Models Matter and Meta Benefits from Them

Open-source software has been one of tech’s biggest-ever success stories. No surprise, then, that developers of open-weight AI models try to borrow some open-source sunshine. Meta Platforms chief Mark Zuckerberg on Monday became the latest tech executive to draw an equivalence between the two, calling open-weight models “open source AI” in a 6,500-word essay posted by the company.

Should AI be open source?

STORY: :: Elena Casas, Business reporter

:: London, England / August 11, 2026

Meta launched a new AI model this week. The thing to know about it is that it’s open weight - that means it comes with publicly accessible core components that users can customise. Closed models are kept fully under the control of the company that made them.

:: Why this matters

:: Meta

This really matters because there is a growing divide in Silicon Valley over whether AI should be closed or open.

The development race for open-weight models is being led by China. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg is arguing the barriers to using open-weight AI in the US should be lower so that American companies can compete better with Chinese rivals.

:: What happens when AI goes rogue?

OpenAI and Anthropic have closed AI systems. They are in control. That means that when an OpenAI model recently went rogue and attacked AI library Hugging Face, it had to use a Chinese open-weight model to defend itself.

:: More regulation?

These recent stories about OpenAI and Anthropic’s models ‘going rogue’ do help to make the case that AI needs more regulation, not less. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman met senators after the hack and President Trump said the administration was considering more controls for AI.

:: Archive

Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t agree. He said ‘the idea that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power is inherently problematic.’

:: Power vs profits

So should we be more worried about AI models breaking out of human control, or about the cutting-edge technology being kept in the hands of a tiny handful of powerful companies?

This argument isn’t just about what the tech itself can do. It’s a struggle over power and profits in Silicon Valley.
