Moby summary of Citigroup Inc.'s Q2 2026 earnings call
Shares of Citigroup fell 5% on Tuesday after the bank reported second-quarter earnings that underwhelmed investors, diverging from rival lenders whose shares rose in afternoon trading. The move was the largest decline since April 4, 2025, when Citi’s stock fell 7.8% following President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff plan announcement. Citi reiterated its earlier full-year target of 10%-11% for return on tangible common equity, or RoTCE.
Citigroup stock dove, reversing earlier gains, after the earnings call raised more questions for investors. The bank’s earnings print beat estimates, but during the earnings call Citi maintained its 10% to 11% full-year return on tangible common equity outlook, an important metric for the industry. Citigroup was the worst performing name within the State Street Financial Select Sector ETF, dragging the ETF back to just above the flatline.

Citigroup reported a robust second quarter, with its profits up double-digits. But its stock fell after executives indicated the bank would use the good times to invest in itself. “A stronger environment isn't just upside to report,” Citi CEO Jane Fraser said on a call with Wall Street analysts.
Mike Santomassimo, the bank’s CFO, attributed the positive credit trends to the U.S. economy and consumers remaining resilient even in the face of stickier-than-expected inflation. Santomassimo attributed that sturdiness to a relatively stable jobs environment. “We are not seeing cracks,” Santomassimo said on a call with reporters.
