China targets US rare earth and other firms with export controls

<body><p>STORY: China added more U.S. entities to its export control list on Monday.&nbsp;</p><p>It accused them of being linked to the U.S. military.</p><p>The list stops Chinese dual-use exports to the companies.&nbsp;</p><p>MP Materials and USA Rare Earth as well as eight other firms were added.</p><p>The move is in retaliation for Washington placing a number of Chinese companies under restrictions last month.</p><p>The Pentagon-supported MP Materials operates the only active rare earth mine in the U.S.</p><p>And it - like USA Rare Earth - is also involved in&nbsp;the mine-to-magnet supply chain.</p><p>Aveox was also placed on the list.</p><p>It's a motor manufacturer for mission-critical applications.</p><p>The three U.S. companies weren't available for comment outside of business hours.</p><p>The measures are a response to what Beijing called the "U.S. government's malicious practice."</p><p>Chinese authorities said it aimed to safeguard national security and interests, and fulfill international obligations like non-proliferation.</p><p>The move amounts to a full ban on dual-use exports to the named firms, and tightens&nbsp;rules that previously only required export licenses.</p><p>But some analysts said China's actions&nbsp;were a largely symbolic response to an earlier move by the U.S.</p><p>They argue most of the companies are U.S. defense industry players and likely won't&nbsp;do business in China.</p><p>The Pentagon previously made its own list of Chinese tech companies it believes to be aiding the country's military.</p><p>The list was updated this month to include tech firms Alibaba and Baidu, as well as autogiants&nbsp;BYD and ​NIO.</p></body>
