A global rout of technology stocks spilled over into Europe in early trading, as investors balked at sky-high valuations in stocks linked to artificial-intelligence. The maker of equipment crucial for the manufacturing of semiconductors tumbled after shares in key customers SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics fell sharply in Asia trade. Dutch peers BE Semiconductor and ASM International fell on the same forces, down 5% and 6%, respectively.

<body><p>STORY: From SK Hynix taking a lead to Apple's reported price hikes, this is Tech Weekly.</p><p>:: Tech Weekly</p><p>SK Hynix overtook rival Samsung Electronics to become South Korea's most valuable listed company.</p><p>Shares rose high enough to turn SK Hynix into the world's most valuable memory chipmaker.</p><p>And it dragged its market capitalization up to $1.35 trillion.</p><p>That was slightly ahead of Samsung Electronics, which had been top since 2000.</p><p>Apple plans to raise prices for its products due to a shortage of memory chips.</p><p>That was the word from CEO Tim Cook in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.</p><p>A surge in AI-driven demand has left consumer electronics companies battling to secure supplies of key components, with chip prices soaring as a result.</p><p>Cook said Apple has done its best to avoid passing rising costs onto consumers, but he told the Journal price hikes were now unavoidable.</p><p>A humanoid robot has been built to bring Emirati children closer to their culture.&nbsp;</p><p>Yousif Lootah, Executive Director of SS Lootah Group</p><p>"Our purpose of, you know, taking the Bu Sunaidah to greet the kids in the mosque and showing them, you know, how the traditional way of celebrating the Eid is pure educational. And we had success of that."</p><p>Lootah added a robot couldn't be Muslim or belong to any religion.</p><p>He instead described it as a tool to help elders, educate children and support hospitality.</p><p>Intel shares soared after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the firm's new partnership with Apple.</p><p>He said the tech titans will work together on chip design and production.</p><p>The contract with Apple would help lock in steady demand from the iPhone maker and could boost Intel's reputation and sales.</p><p>The president said it was his latest effort to help Intel, in which the U.S. government has a 10% stake.</p><p>And a source told Reuters Meta is pushing for legal protection in Washington.</p><p>The U.S. social media giant faces a wave of lawsuits over child-harm claims tied to its platforms.</p><p>The source said the firm is lobbying U.S. lawmakers for language that would shield social media firms from certain claims tied to minors’ safety and privacy.</p><p>Reuters also reviewed drafts of the proposal, which is linked to the Kids Online Safety Act, now under consideration in the Senate.</p><p>The bill would require companies to exercise care in launching app features like infinite scrolling, activity notifications and appearance-altering photo filters.</p></body>

<body><p>STORY: There’s a new member of South Korea’s A-list.</p><p>Chip factory staffers&nbsp;are suddenly enjoying hot demand, and not just at work.</p><p>They’ve also become a very desirable commodity in the country’s competitive marriage market.</p><p>The change comes as the global AI boom sees salaries soar at top tech firms.</p><p>Some workers at Samsung’s chip division are set for bonuses of about $416,000.</p><p>That’s around 14 times South Korea’s average annual salary.</p><p>There are big payments too at arch-rival SK Hynix.</p><p>Now all that has chip workers rivalling doctors and lawyers as the nation’s most desirable partners.</p><p>Lee Sung-mi is a consultant at matchmaking agency Sunoo.</p><p>She says tech staffers now rate very highly:</p><p>"Scores for Samsung Electronics employees have recently risen from 83 to 87. As for clients who work at SK Hynix, their scores are expected to climb from&nbsp;around 80 to 83—showing just how highly favored the company has become."</p><p>The big payouts are also reshaping South Korea’s job&nbsp;market.</p><p>There too the medical and legal professions had long ranked at the top.</p><p>Now career advisers and students both say there’s hot competition to get into the tech firms.</p><p>Ambitious young people are even looking to vocational schools, since some chip jobs only need a high-school diploma.</p><p>Park Jun-young is a career consultant for university students:</p><p>"Semiconductors are arguably the only industry that can truly ride the AI boom. They've taken center&nbsp;stage, and the result is outsized salaries and bonuses—so much so that, in effect, it's created a different tier."</p><p>At Korea University, a semiconductor engineering course has seen admission scores hit historic highs.</p><p>And it’s drawing students who might once have aimed for medical school.</p><p>Freshman Koo Bon-ho is one.</p><p>"I chose semiconductor engineering major because I figured campus life would be a bit easier than in medical school, the internships wouldn't be as long, and since I wanted to get a job quickly and enter the workforce."</p><p>With chips accounting for around 40% of the country’s exports, some say it’s time the tech workers got their due.</p><p>Right now, staffers at Samsung and SK Hynix are certainly reaping the financial and romantic rewards of the AI boom.</p></body>
