Banks Offload $1 Trillion In Loan Risk As SRT Market Surges

Banks are opening a new balance-sheet escape valve, and investors are moving in fast. Significant risk transfers, or SRTs, have become one of the fastest-growing corners of credit markets, allowing lenders to shift credit risk from loan portfolios to outside investors while reducing the regulatory capital they need to hold. Banks had offloaded risk tied to more than 905 billion, or $1 trillion, of loans by the end of last year, up 26% from a year earlier, according to the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers.
