Samsung Fails To Impress

Sharp declines for high-flying memory and chipmakers including Intel, Marvell Technology and Applied Materials led a 1.2% decline in the Nasdaq Composite index and a 0.5% drop in the S&P 500. An update on second-quarter results from the South Korean giant had the company projecting record operating profits. Investors feared this reaction was a sign of how future reports for other chipmakers and AI-related tech companies might be received.

Burry said that plans by two of South Korea’s largest tech companies to build a chip hub set off fresh alarm bells about whether the massive sums of money being poured into AI can ever pay off. The PHLX Semiconductor Index, which is tracked by the ETF that Burry is betting against, fell 6.3%.

Asian shares are mixed as tech stocks fall in Japan and South Korea

Asian markets were mixed on Monday as selling of artificial intelligence-related shares pulled benchmarks in Japan and South Korea lower, though gains for other stocks helped offset those losses. U.S. futures advanced and oil prices gained, though they remained close to the levels they were at before the Iran war began in late February. Tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated over the weekend as Iran launched fresh drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait in response to new U.S. airstrikes, adding to uncertainties clouding the global economic outlook.

Micron Earnings Have Never Looked Better. Start Worrying.

Micron Technology's stock has risen by almost 9x over the past twelve months, taking its market capitalization above $1.2 trillion - among the largest single-year gains in the company's four-decade trading history. The rally is driven by surging demand and a shortage of high-bandwidth memory that is used alongside AI accelerators in data centers. Hyperscalers, including Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), and Meta (META), are projected to spend roughly $700 billion on AI infrastructure this year,
