One Thing I’m Watching: Berkshire Hathaway’s Cash Hoard

Berkshire Hathaway's mountain of cash and Treasury bills hit a record amount just above this level at the end of March. This Saturday morning, when Berkshire reports earnings, I'll be watching where that number goes next—and where the company is putting its cash to work. Berkshire CEO Greg Abel inked two megadeals in the past few months that might have made a small dent in the cash pile—a $6.8 billion purchase of the home builder Taylor Morrison Home and a $10 billion investment in Alphabet shares.

Berkshire investors seem to be warming up to Greg Abel's leadership. 👀

The stock is trading at its highest price since Warren Buffett announced his retirement in May 2025.

The recent gains have been fueled by a rotation back into safe-haven plays to hedge against riskier tech stocks.

Although it's worth noting that the stock is still badly lagging the S&P 500.

Labor Market Proves Weaker Than Expected. That Could Keep Rate Hikes at Bay.

The July jobs report made one thing very clear: Policymakers and investors can't take their eye off the ball. Going into Friday's data release, the consensus was that the labor market was stable and had gained ground since last year's stalled-out environment. It proved to be a bit of a similar pattern to recent years, particularly 2025, when July payrolls disappointed and the BLS lowered the previous two months' estimated payroll gains by 258,000.
