Strategy holds nearly a million Bitcoin while trading at a fraction of last year's price, and the question dividing Wall Street is whether the capital-markets engine that makes it compelling is the same one that could eventually break it.
The world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder has sold hundreds of millions of dollars in BTC since June as it changes how it funds dividends and manages its cash.
Wall Street analysts refuse to abandon their buy calls on a stock that has collapsed 75% over the past year, and one outlier has staked a price target so aggressive it would require a near-total reinvention of how the market values bitcoin leverage.
The average brokerage recommendation (ABR) for Strategy (MSTR) is equivalent to a Buy. The overly optimistic recommendations of Wall Street analysts make the effectiveness of this highly sought-after metric questionable. So, is it worth buying the stock?

Strategy Inc. recently reported second-quarter 2026 results showing revenue of US$122.37 million but a very large net loss of US$8,219.63 million, driven largely by Bitcoin-related unrealized losses, and has begun selling Bitcoin and issuing stock to repurchase preferred shares and build its US dollar reserve. The shift from relentless Bitcoin accumulation to using Bitcoin sales and equity issuance for capital management marks a new phase in Strategy’s attempt to support its preferred...

He explains why he expects Strategy to outperform Bitcoin in the next bull cycle, how its STRC product and "digital credit" framework aim to make Strategy the "JP Morgan of digital finance." YieldMax ETFs chief strategist Mike Khouw explains how the firm's options-based ETFs use covered call spreads rather than traditional covered calls, targeting roughly 80% participation in outsized upside moves while still generating monthly income for investors. Speaking to Proactive's Stephen Gunnion, Khouw outlined the difference: by selling an upside call and buying a higher-strike call above it, YieldMax avoids capping gains entirely when a stock makes an unusually large move. Khouw describes the range of ETFs launched with HanETF, including YMAG, a diversified fund-of-funds across YieldMax strategies; NATY, focused on defence; CHPY, targeting semiconductors and IT hardware; and MSTY, a single-stock strategy built around Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which he describes as primarily a Bitcoin play run by Michael Saylor. On who these products suit, Khouw said they are designed for investors seeking a balance between equity participation and income - a substitute for the dividend-paying stocks that are less common today. He described them as 'equity light': more equity exposure than a bond, less than a pure stock holding, with some downside volatility reduction built in through the spread structure. Khouw noted that options-based income ETFs currently represent only about 1% of the entire US ETF market, and an even smaller share elsewhere, but expects that proportion to grow materially as ageing demographics push more investors to seek income from accumulated assets and as appetite for alternatives to conventional fixed income increases. Strategy sold 1,690 Bitcoin for $108.6 million to buy back STRC shares still trading below their $100 par value.
Strategy, the bitcoin-hoarding firm founded by Michael Saylor, said it sold 1,690 bitcoin last week to fund preferred stock repurchases. Strategy said last Monday that it had offloaded about $105 million worth of the cryptocurrency in the prior week. Strategy also sold about $653.1 million worth of common stock shares mainly to boost its U.S. dollar cash reserves, which stood at $4.65 billion as of Sunday.
All of the proceeds went into a $109 million STRC buyback, while the company sold six times as much again in its own stock.
Michael Saylor built his fortune and his reputation on a single promise: never sell bitcoin. Strategy has now broken that promise multiple times in quick succession, but one specific number buried in its preferred stock data reveals exactly when the selling stops.
Both IBIT and MSTR promised Bitcoin exposure, but in 2026 they delivered very different kinds of pain. Before you decide which one deserves a spot in your portfolio, you need to understand what you are actually buying with each.
