In 2019, while researching a book on the U.S.-China competition, I visited Huawei’s sprawling new R&D campus in Dongguan, a city about an hour’s drive from the company’s Shenzhen headquarters. A Huawei executive explained the design to me with a straight face: “We’re doing well in Europe.” In a Wall Street Journal interview that November, founder Ren Zhengfei invited President Trump to come visit and brushed off U.S. sanctions with characteristic bravado.

A jump in oil prices is doing little to take the shine off of U.S. stocks this morning. Brent crude futures are up more than 3% to trade above $94 a barrel after a weekend exchange of fire between the U.S. and Iran, even as both countries continue to hammer out a peace deal. Adding to the fervor this morning was Nvidia’s unveiling of its new superchip, which it described as “the most efficient PC chip ever built.”
Shares in Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other South Korean tech firms rallied on Monday, as expected meetings between Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Korean executives boosted hopes of tie-ups in AI and robotics. Chipmaker Samsung Electronics was also buoyed by data that South Korea's semiconductor exports surged to a record high in May on the AI boom, helping the country's total exports post their biggest rise in over four decades. Huang is expected to visit South Korea later this week and meet LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and other Korean executives, a person with knowledge of the matter said.
South Korea’s exports grew at the fastest pace in more than four decades in May, as artificial intelligence-driven demand for chips pushed the value of shipments to a record.
