World shares declined Thursday following more of what the U.S. military said were defensive strikes against Iran. Oil prices gained more than $2 a barrel after having dropped sharply a day before. In early European trading, Germany's DAX was nearly unchanged at 25,175.63 and the CAC 40 in Paris lost 0.4% to 8,172.84.
A report from Reuters stated that the U.S. military had launched overnight strikes in Iran, targeting a military site and drones that were viewed as a threat around the Strait of Hormuz.
All three major indexes spent the day inching toward fresh record highs as oil futures seemed to see an end in sight for the Iran war. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 0.1% to a new high of 26,674.73 on Wednesday. Today’s market wins were largely driven by the fact that oil futures were hovering at a six-week low on the news that the U.S. and Iran seem to be heading toward a deal to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
